Meursault/Woodlouse - Unless I've counted wrongly Make SALE 19 and BRAD 20 - but not filled in grid yet.

PKD - Think 11 - member resisting pressure, just alternative meaning (Building Trade)

Thanks for enough comments to make me not bother with this one. Cold solving is not my strength. I find it hard enough with a few letters to help 8-(

I also nearly didn't bother after reading the preamble and the laborious cold solving involved. However , I persevered and almost filled the grid. I am however short of one 'tune in' and struggling to get 19d. I have 'sl?es' which doesn't leave many options but none seem to fit the clue, so maybe have something wrong ! Any help gratefully received.

SMEES. The across answer where you have the L is a TUNE IN clue/answer

I've sort of finished but am not sure it was worth it. Not being able to verify the source without first having followed the three kinds of advice meant that a lot of guess-work was required - and with a carte blanche grid, the 12 doctored entries were far more than there should have been, IMO.

Now I have only to add the bars, a chore with the possibility of slip-ups. Why not just allow the solver to appreciate the PDM and leave the grid unchanged? Messy, certainly, but that's not our fault.

I have 44 words & 56 bars IF there re no horizontal bars in the 1st & 12th columns. That would work as far as the former is concerned as it's a word, but is T...... L .... a phrase ? (I think it may be as the preamble says "phrases" and I can only see one other - in column 11.)
