sh - in "Corbett's" "timeless but" loses not just T for time but also another letter. The remaining 3 letters are a shortening of a word for "twisted".

Thanks Will, makes sense. I had been thinking 'story' was part of the wordplay for some reason.

Bit tougher than average, this one. Usually, 3/4 clues solved gives me enough to get grid-filling, but I had to press on until I was more like 90% done before I could fill enough to get going. One entertaining wrinkle in the fill which others have obviously spotted.
Minor disappointment - having worked out the nature of the 6 unclued entries, I was so hoping that the extra item would be a modern seventh which, by some accounts, is "fake". Alas, it wasn't!

Usually, with these jigsaw puzzles, there are a couple of long answers round which to work, and in this respect this puzzle was unusual. (I speak with the authority of one who solved his first puzzle about three years ago.) But once you figured out to start with two 7-letter words beginning with the same letter, the grid-fill fell into place, I found. And it enabled one to solve those last pesky 6 or 7 clues. You'll gather I enjoyed this very much.

I’m relying on the message of the extra letters to make sense of what’s going on. However, I have the 4-8th letters as an incoherent sequence of consonants, which I presume should not be the case?

Dylan, No. Not if you are taking the letters from the across clues, followed by those from the down clues.

Yes I’m using the normal grid order. I’ve checked several times and they all seem correct. Would it be legitimate for you to say which one is a vowel?
Thanks

Dylan, purely a guess, but if you have the "one to influence waders" answer in 10d your grid is wrong.
