I have 3 clashes:
2nd in 30d (6th in 32a)
1st in 34a (3rd in 28d)
1st in 37a (2nd in 33d)
Could someone help with the remaining two?

Also, how to determine the losing letters - because no choice results in both generating real words?

Crackability I have a 4th at second in 47a. I haven't managed to fully parse, though.

Can you help with 40d, because I'm still at a loss!

Hello Crackability.

Remaining two clashes are:

3rd in 48a
2nd in 47a

The losing letters are the ones which complete the words in the messages. There are two letters missing from the last word of the across message and one each from the first, second and fifth words of the down message. I have left the other clashing letters where they are in the grid leading to various non-words. I can't work out what you have to do in the rectangle - whatever it is it might resolve the non-word thing.

Thanks pkd.

I think that means my original thoughts are correct.

Can you put me out of my misery with 48a)? I'm fairly sure it's the "t" that is the misprint, but still at a loss. Help!

I think "gait" is the answer to 40d crackability. By intercom meaning sounds like. Still can't get 48a, though!
