Peterm...re 21D/27A, I think the third letter of 21D must stand.
The wordplay in 27A leads to the answer to be inserted BUT the definition does need to be changed by that crossing letter. I know the preamble doesn't make any mention of this and this is the first one of this type I've entered...hopefully the other ones confirm the pattern?

Not liking the look of this...I'm sure I have 31A but it doesn't fit with 21d either.

I assumed initially that the word square provided was the one to used...I suspect now that we are meant to construct our own(of three words)...the one given is an example with two words.

Thanks ixion. I've looked at this again, and I think you're right about the checked letter in 21dn/27ac. The same issue applies in 6dn/10ac and 9dn/10ac. The instructions are poor - I had assumed all the non-Playfair words in the grid would be legitimate words. I'm not sure what you mean by changing the definition though.
31ac is a Playfair answer, so it will need to be encoded before entry. Presumably, it will then fit with the last letters of 21dn & 25dn.

Can anyone confirm that the Wrong Number clues really contain a ONE WORD definition, as several seem to cry out a muliple word definition, eg 'put on a pedestal', 'one may have links with Mafia' etc

The 'one word' is in the other clue where the answer goes, not in the original clue. Thus 19D has the one word definition 'worshipped' and 8D the word 'islander'

Lumen - I hadn't really thought about that, but you're right about the definitions in several WN clues being more than one word. It's more loose wording in the instructions.

The instructions say they contain a one-word definition of the answer required at the number where it stands; it doesn't say the clue has a one-word definition for the answer that goes elsewhere.

OK stevem, point taken. Not loose wording but loose reading on my part.
