Not at all ginge, just a difference of area I think mate. Many in the North-West will say they're attending a wake when they're actually going to a funeral.
Be interesting to see what the Chambers says, I didn't even check it. Could I trouble somebody to check their copy as I'm not home until tomorrow and can't access a hard copy (the online version isn't extensive enough).
No offence taken at all, it's good to hear other's opinions on our clues.

funeral... disposal of the dead, with related ceremonies or observances

and I always thought the wake was the tea and biscuits/whiskey after the funeral service!
