Are you talking about 17, Simon?

Possible side-effect of air travel

Doh! Mr Stupidy Stupid!!

I'd written in 'sea leg' as something one might get, albeit in the singular (hence just in the one leg) after a long sea journey. Applying Spooner, I could sort of see how the first bit might work......

Thanks for all the hints, I'll go and stand at the back of the class

Haha, it's so annoying that. Before you go could you parse second half of 4 for me. As I said I just used the def and anagram.

4 took me a while to see. Anagram of word 3, word 4 (having had words 5 and 6 applied to it) and one side of 'tent'. Hope that makes sense?

I'm pretty sure I have the normal answer for 20a. Someone has already said that the first word is the extra word. In which case I can't see how 20a can change to fit with 16d (which is unchanged surely) or 20d. Am I being exceedingly thick???

Hi Tintin,

In 20a, the first word IS the extra word; the second word is the 'normal' definition; the rest is the wordplay. So, if you're happy with your unchanged answer (which fits in with 20d), you should be able to apply the extra word instruction to it. It then fits in with 16d as well. More hints if needed.

I still fail to see how my "normal" answer for 20a can possibly fit with the 3rd letter of 16d. I'm assuming the latter 4-letter answer is correct i.e. definition is "knocks" and backwards it spells a synonym for "box". Am I barking up the wrong tree?

hi Tintin, your "normal" answer for 20a should clash with 16d.

Sound like your 16d is definitely correct and, as trevor has put, will clash with your 'normal' answer for 20a. So you need to adjust every occurrence of a certain letter in the 'normal' 20a in order to enter it in the grid and fit with your 16d.
