Jolan: I managed to confuse myself. I've always thought that a homophone indicator meant that the indicated word sounds the same as the word written in the clue. My first post was saying that 'taken in' was a sneaky homophone indicator and my second post was saying I'd made a mistake and you had not used a homophone indicator.

Jolan: Thanks for setting the clues and for your explanations. Having read through the thread again I believe that clue 2 is not fair in that you used a homophone indicator for 'caps' and 'berets'. I am hear to learn and if I'm wrong I would like to be told why.

I wasn't around to have a go at these but I'll still stick my oar in.

identical caps = beret beret

taken in (sounds like) beri beri = disorder.

hard but fair I'd say.

I looked at this earlier and got ,traps.
But when I looked for beriberi in Chambers it appears as one word?

phillip: we are expected to get to 'beret' from 'cap' and that's not a homophone. The homophones are 'beret' and 'beri'.No?
