Jack **** was Irish + last two letters are French for 'to'

As far as I can find out, Jack's origins are uncertain, but he was probably from Sussex...........

I like the "to" in French, but there's one problem - no "to" or similar in the clue!

I wonder if it should have been "getting to gift for Pierre"? Still doesn't really work, though.

Yes, lots of uncertainty. Wikipedia thinks he wasn't Irish, but several other sites do.

(btw we got 21 out of a possible 78 on PopMaster!)

I am sorry to be dim, but why is 30 a set?

jazzy suggests that it's set because it doesn't vary. I don't think either of us are very impressed by the clue, though.

I always listen to the question on Radio 3 at 9.30 when I can, too. "Counterpoint" on Radio 4 at 3.00 on Mondays cover a very wide range - you would do well on that, I expect.
