I have all the clued answers ( but see below ) but still cannot even begin to grasp the theme. For 8 down I have tsu??li and cannot find anything to fit that pattern which suggests that I have probably gone wrong somwhere. A strong pointer to the right path would be appreciated.

8 D. Only your 'l' is wrong. There aren't many words that begin Tsu... - and the one we're familiar with is for sad reasons. I no longer have a copy of this, so can't give details of other helpful unclued answers.
