Can anyone help me with 5 down. There is only one dictionary entry that could fit the space, but I can't work out the original answer. The clue is " synagogue leader elevated a Spanish God. "

Marca - 5 down is RAV for synagogue leader + UNA for a Spanish. The grid entry is RUANA.
I have a completed grid and know the theme but I can't work out which letters come out of 35d, 29d and 25d.

Thanks Haggis for the parsing. I was fixated on El being involved. Extra letters are 35d E (from deare)
29d N (from screens
And25d Y (from gyrates)

I have the theme(even though I am missing some of the required letters!) and 3 of the required highlighted but still a lot of emptiness in my grid!
Help please with some down in SW corner:
34a A lecturer ran away lacking dead poet's calm (7)
37a Lines removed from dictionary included "one of two lobes" (6)
40a Jock smoked in Macdonald's yard with his cows (4)

34 Allegge - Allegged, minus the 'd' ('lacking dead')
37 Glossa, lobes - Glossary is the dictionary, ry/railway/lines are removed.
40 Reeky, smoked.

I haven't got 1 D 'John's soaring melody "Wings" (7)'. Can you help with that?

Malone. From memory. I think 1d is lataria and is entered as lariat.
