You're right, Chrise - but the Wright brothers were the first to fly so my WENT EAST could still be right - nobody seems to know what direction they flew, cricket pitch or not!
Difficult to tell, brackendale, but more probably they went more or less N-S ( or S-N, depending on the wind?) along the beach - though I don't know what direction the prevailing wind was in - from the east would favour flying east.
