I'm having rel trouble with the bottom right hand corner. Please could some kind person give me a hand with 37 across: A German possessing knowledge about oil (6) ?ER??? and 40 across: Staffs place in country, one by outskirts of Egremont (7) E?R???? Thanks in advance

NEROLI - defn oil - EIN (german for one) with LORE inside reversed - E is extra

ETRURIA - et (outside letters of egremont , rural(in country) + i (one) - L from rural is extra

37 Neroli, oil. Ein is German for one/a and lore is knowledge. (I can't remember the preamble wording about extra letters!_

As a newcomer, it would seem rude to ask for help until I've offered some!

For those still struggling to make sense of that last unclued across light ?A?TON from Greedy Kite's original thread-starter - and of the spare four letters to be associated with it, correctly identified by Orson as N,F,I & K (though not necessarily in that order): you might find it helpful to think film. You want the eponymous protagonist of a 1991 film by a celebrated pairing. Hope that helps.
