Just beat me to that, Unclued! The E is in 16dn : "brats" should be "braes" as the answer is a Scottish word.

Getting there but not sure of answer for 4ac which has misprint. I have coccos for " possible f(a)rmer of lac in taro cropped with fish.

This affects 7dn "Don Juan's mother in poem and in book which I have one?

Any help ?

Thanks in advance

You have to "crop" "coccos" and add a two-letter word for a fish starting with the first letter of the name of Don Juan's mother (in Byron's poem). This will give you the insect that "forms" lac (or shellac).
Gem94 not a typo but an error on my part rushing to find a source of "u" in that clue. "Malus" is not in my old Chambers.

Gem94 : I see it now, a long way into the entry under the phrase for the tree bearing the fruit in question. Thanks for that correction. Less haste more speed, I suppose.

I have a complete grid apart from 37 - ?t?are. Only one word fits but I can't work out the parsing. I now have the 12 letters and they make no sense. How do they exemplify the two words of the quotation?

steare - i'm not sure of the parsing either.

the 12 letters form 3 words 3, 2, 7

if you google them you will see they are 3 of 6 somethings. Then google the something and it should lead you to the author of the quote. which is 3 "somethings "........
The ..... is 13 letters long and is easily spottable in your grid.
Sorry I'm not much good at giving better clues.
Ask again if you are still stuck
