I have this phrase too but have not reconciled some of my answers yet. Are entries all real words?

All down entries are, but none of across.
I think I've cracked the methodology re the across entries, just a few to find.

Hi - I've got the phrase and the methodology but I'm having some trouble in the bottom left hand corner. Can anyone help with 9D?
'Prepare covering letter restrained in tone when sent back' - A-TI-E
(the clue needs to be tweaked as per the phrase, but I just can't see how)
Thanks!

RIT is abbr for ritenuto, musical direction meaning restrained.
Put this inside ETA (Greek letter) and reverse.
ATTIRE.

Personally, I didn't find the pointer any help at all..
In fact it was a distraction. I think the puzzle can be solved without wasting time trying to figure its relevance.
