But perhaps I am getting a little too old and slow, because even with your expert breakdown of the clue, I just cannot ''see'' it. It is frustrating as I blitzed through the entire crossword bar for these two.

The 'drill' is 'make holes in' (paper, say) and it's definitely just sitting there in the clue.
