Would appreciatean explanation for parsing this, from yesterday's i. The answer is 'Take the stage'.

How one might get to the town of Bottleneck and perform as Frenchy, the saloon singer (4,3,5)

Looks like a reference to this film…

I actually think it’s a reference to the original 1939 version Destry Rides Again, Jono, because of the spelling of Frenchy.

It’s a western set in the town of Bottleneck, in which Frenchy is a cheap saloon singer, played by Marlene Dietrich. You would take the stage(coach) to get there, hence the double definition.

Ah, I’m sure you’re correct, Quisling. I did notice the different spelling of Frenchy.

Ha - thanks for your responses, Jono and Quisling. I had assumed the double def you suggested, and indeed the likelihood of a Western movie but couldn't reference such a one.

Quite a nice clue really.
