It makes sense but my daughter tells me that it came from the Globe & Mail which wouldn't accept the letters 'as a' being ignored.
On a different vein I submitted the following AZED clue -'rover broke goblet, cad! (12)' Any good?

Would as a in this case not mean for indicating that pagan is the definition? I can't think what else it might be...
