Thanks scorpiojo. I did think it was an anagram but couldn't get the 2 missing letters. Do you have any hints for 1D? BY and large not one to be macho. WIth your help I have ?a???

Very late to this, but there were a few I didn't like this week.

23 "one short" for "take off last letter" is rather loose.
2d someone has already mentioned; for me they aren't homophones either!
17d (to be pedantic) "Medical sign" is not the same as the answer - doctors (my wife is one) make a distinction between "signs", which are what they find by examining the patient, and the answer, which is what the patient tells them about how he/she feels.
