Are the eight clues with "a string of letters to be removed" 12A, 20A, 28A, 4D, 8D, 24D, 32D and one other?

Is he extra letter in 35a is H for "man briefly" = (H)OM so that OM and INCITES N form an anagram? But H doesn't seem to make sense. Thanks.

Yes thanks, malone, I've got the correct extra letter for 35a now. But my logic was equally valid for H. I do dislike it when a clue can lead to two equally valid conclusions, even though one is not the correct one.

I didn't bother with all the extra letters, so couldn't help there. I found this a really tough crossword.

Back where we should be - nice idea for the 8 items, but not sure how they form a "sequence". They certainly aren't chronological. Still perplexed about how to complete the 2 empty cells - is the theme relevant here (surely it is?)?

Aha! A moment's thought provides the nicely concealed "sequence". But it's a pity that wiki gives 2 sites for 40, though happily only one of them leads to a word. Unfortunate.
