genre = anagram of energ(y)

oral = remove 'demise' from 'demoralise'

23a: oral = exam (def)
(dem) oral (ise) minus demise (passing)

Those are straightforward clues - how can they be dumbed down without being patronising?

You have a point there, dagnabit, but Norah, the site manager, recently posted to the effect that if people ask for hints or additional clues, that's what they should get.

So "My first is in dog but not in cat..." would be the appropriate level.

A clue would be to tell devonian that she had the last letter wrong and to check the crossing clue

I'm totally stuck on 12ac. I'm trying to find an anagram which involves "more polite" (but isn't exactly that!). Clues please.
