1A. Prickly shrubs exist in S African cols (6). ?EB???. I have found a mountain pass in SA called Nek. I can't find any shrub, prickly or not beginning NEB. (Malone says first letter is N)

BE in NEKS = NEBEKS, alternative spelling of NABK, 'the Christ's-thorn.'

There are two shrubs beginning with those letters in Bradford's Dictionary.
