Sorry to contradict Chrise but I seem to remember reading about either phosgene or even mustard gas. Mind you I could be wrong

You're not entirely wrong; all three were used, I think. Chlorine was preferred though, as it was far cheaper to make (and was thus used on the date specified, one of the earliest uses.)
