Finally ... it arrived.

Maltby likes this theme. It adds a little twist.

* My apologies to those who came up with a number different from mine, as I was adamant about the correct solution:
http://www.crosswordsolver.org/forum/484663/offset/27

I discounted diagonals & the obvious one in unclued A1, which was part of the light.
My rationale was that the (hidden) horizontal & vertical occurrences added up to 9,
the answer to D40, in the bottom right corner where an artist usually signs, as did Hirschfeld.
e.g. http://chambermagic.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Untitled-2.jpg

Maltby missed a golden opportunity to tie that in.
I am most disappointed with the result and shall be contacting Harper's and the setter forthwith.

Cheers.

Didn't think I'd have time this morning but definitely on the easy side, admittedly with a bit of time for the penny to drop with theme "C", but still very enjoyable. As usual some really nicely worded clues of which I like14*, & 36 across, 1,2,6 & 23* down. TThanks again syzygy, much appreciated.

PS syzygy, don't beat yourself up over last month's. Since you explained how it worked in practice i agree the setter "missed a trick'.

PPS aristo, I hope you look in. I can thoroughly recommend the last WSJ puzzle syzygy posted which you may have missed in your absence, I reckon it's right up your street.

Thanks, syzzie! Hope to get to this tomorrow.

ginge: I did do the WSJ puzzle, and loved it of course. Quite a while back I related here how several years ago I'd run into an acquaintance who was editor of The Atlantic and told her how heartbroken I was about the departure of these setters from her magazine. She said, "I don't do puzzles. Are they that good?" After I'd pulled my jaw back up into place I said, "Uh, they're geniuses." She looked as surprised by my reaction as I had been to hers, and said, "Oh I'll have to tell them you said so."

Hi aristo, nice anecdote. On a much lesser level, I used to drink in the same pub as the main setter for the Glasgow Herald (when in my opinion it was a real crossword) and occasionally he'd ask for some input for a particular clue and on several occasions my offering was used which was quite nice to see in print.

@Ginge

You're right about theme "C". Took a moment. He did inspire some "cotton" T-shirts though! Google it.

A18 ? Not a real word as far as I can find. Name, perhaps?

@Aristo

Maybe that was the editor who caused them to leave. First the puzzle was pulled from the print version of the magazine; only available on-line. That caused a flurry at the time.

re 18, I doubt the puzzle's subject is well known in the UK but if you google A B C, you'll find a rather famous American; C is not a he.
