Anyone else on the final stage? Have no ideas for the final across solution (I have ?A?TON), nor why it says "suggested twice" or "differently placed" (alphabetically or after name? ) in the preamble. Don't have ODE, so lost also on what kind of 26d. Any hints welcome (I know OE is supposed to help, but don't see how). The "fictional 9th" escapes me. Enough!

All of the 26ds have 2 initials (or a 2 letter first name) as they're usually known. Don't know of that is the key but it is too much of a coincidence for me to ignore it.

it is the letters that matters. 34a tells you which ones matter. Almost there.

if you follow it through to the end you are left with four letters. Properly arranged they go at the other end of the final across clue (ie as compared to the placement of all the other initials / names). Then the answer will hit you.
