"immediately after new work, finish off, retiring"

U - O -

100% sure of the U and the O

Can only be "upon" meaning immediately after?

I can see it could be N for new and OP for work in reverse (retiring?) but can't see where the U comes in

Hmm. Has to be, I suppose. I've come across "op" as an abbreviation for opus a hundred times, but never "opu". And I still can't see why "retiring" should mean reversing.

Maybe it's just a crap clue.

It's "work, finish off" - i.e. take the last letter off OPUS
