I agree Marydom, I didn't enjoy this at all.

One still puzzles me....

12a. Forbidding hosts English verse to read (6) - DEVOUR would fit the parsing but the definition is more puzzling. It looks like:-

Forbidding = DOUR + E(nglish) + V(erse)

but I can't find any online thesaurus that gives 'Read' and 'Devour' as synonyms.

...and my children always devoured the Harry Potter books as soon as they came out!

Chambers gives a definition of 'devour' as 'to take in eagerly by the senses or mind' so 'read' seems ok.
