Has anyone got help for me with regard to 12d? Charles brilliant erecting complex units. May be 8 letters or more likely 7. I have CARR???S But the second R may not be there at all.

I have only just started the crossword, but I don't think there is an extra word in this clue. I have porter as the definition and a 3 letter answer.

I agree with definition, and probably have same three letter answer as you - but can't parse it.
And I think it has to have an extra word to yield a letter necessary to the eighteen letter definition of the phrase referred to in preamble.

L stands for railroad in America. This "stops" AE - aetat or aged in Latin.
