15 a correct
35a "burn" is a superfluous word.
My problem lies in the 4 upper words because my Chambers is about as old as me. I've been resisting buying a new one but I fear it may not be long delayed.

tks bignop - twigged the theme after finding most off the superfluous words after i posted. still struggling to link 8d altho the obvious word is now superfluous as per the title.

If you mean the top one, I think I have it as something no longer in circulation but that seems a bit weakly connected with superfluous.

yes, that's the one -- seems weak to me too.

None of the top four words is superfluous but they are above and have a connection. The word created from the superfluous words is sort of synonymous and gives what should come beneath. Very clever.
