The answer to clue 14D is somewhat controversial?

Overmodest up north at the end of the last century (3)Answer 'MIM'

This is a Scottish word meaning 'demure, prim',and is perfectly correct, but I think the letters MIM are also meant to apply to " the end of the last of the last century" meaning 1999

There was a lot of controversy as to whether 1999 should be written as MIM or MCMXCIX
I believe that the latter is usually accepted?

I think - MIM is used simply as it is less cumbersome to write out.

In this instance it works within the clue.
