45 across: Bottom, old-fashioned, is enlivening in turn, missing Thisbe's end (7) The letters I have are S - A - I - A. The only word I can find which fits these letters is STAMINA, but I can't see why this should be right. All help gratefully received!

Thank you all! Is it just me, or have the Times crosswords been less satisfying of late? Sloppy clues, dubious definitions, and in some cases actual mistakes?
