34d Is that man in Cambodia a leader? (5) Answer is sheik (which is entered in the grid as shake - actually as S H A E with the K in the border) but how does the clue work please - i can see "he" for "that man" but the rest........?

Thanks for any explanation.

K is alright for Cambodia, but there's no indication it's supposed to be an anagram. I don't understand this one, either (my last query on the puzzle). Can anyone offer a better axplanation (by all due respect for Mamya: after all, I'd come to that conclusion, too!)?

I've pondered this too

According to dictionary

's'
1. contraction of is: She's here.

So clue would be

Is (S) Man (HE) in (I) Cambodia (KH)

It is clued as 5 letters because the homophone shake is 5 rather than the word sheikh.

Hi Tina

13a- definition is composer

Fair is a homophone for fare

8d is an old word for reduce to a fixed sum

Fee is charge in three letter abbr for African

This is then changed to a homophone when entered

DJA: K alone is perfectly correct for Cambodia (at least can be)
Even accepting your explanation of the S & N (true, they're both in Ch., I realize) I find the clue poor.
And above all the letters to be entered are an anagram of "sheik" : do we agree on that?
Confused & unsatisfied (not with you, of course, but with this part of the puzzle)!!!

Hi GK

I agree clue is not the best. I don't like all these contractions.

In my opinion it's a coincidence that sheik is there as a potential anagram. The reason I think that is that as it is entered as a homophone -shake (5) it would need to be a different letter count in the original form as all the other answers were- so in this case sheikh (6).

I think all of the other homophone clues had different letter counts?

You may be right there, DJA --- I didn't think of that factor! Thank you! (Not that it affects anything important anyway, of course!)
P.S. Hope you're feeling better now!
