Not a full answer, but have been regular since mid 2010. Others such as trevor were there already. This was pre login, so site tended to be a bit cluttered with trolls.

Thanks Mars10 and AB - As I said just wondering what brought these wonderful cryptic minds together. I don't know anyone who enjoys a cryptic clue - in fact, to use a Glaswegian term , I am slagged for it but I don't mind I'm used to it Thanks again

Mars10 haven't visited the ANSWERBANK will check it out tomorrow but rightly or wrongly feel everyone on this site has been very tolerant of me To be honest I don't think I will ever crack the cryptic mind but hey I enjoy trying T

emrach, check out bigdave44.com . He has a good section about the different sorts of cryptic clues. I found it very helpful.

To find the outline history of a website use the Internet Wayback machine:

Entering www.crosswordsolver.org
gives a first appearance of November 2006 for the site. You can see how the site changes over time.
