Good morning! Hope you enjoy today's offering. I'm going off for a drive in Snowdonia and don't expect to be back till well after 5. Happy solving. J

I set crossies just for pleasure. I wonder if some of you excellent regulars would like to try a few of my clues? Since they're new, no letters!

Please withhold solutions till 5 pm (GMT+1) to allow others to have a go.

1. Sound loud and disorderly (8)
2. Depart like the last emperor from Japan (6)
3. Cheerful song about exotic beef may become an aid to survival (8)
4. Max coerces mule to reproduce without having sexual relations (8)
5. Separate two rivals in one hour twenty seconds (6)

5 winnow. Second letter of all but the 2nd - 7th words. Definition - separate.

Couldn't get 2.

Clue 2 is proving a bit tricky by the looks of it. I got 1 & 3 but that was all! Nice work :)

Hi Jolan
i got the same as jazzgirl (1,3,4).
annoyed that i didn't see 5 (i think you used the same device before - a time with the word seconds - not complaining though, great clue).
still can't get 2.

Thanks all. Jazzgirl - superb! Great going Peterm, Lionheart and Trevor.
Really nice to note a problem with no. 2. It's so rare, that it perks me up, no end. LOL

OK! Suppose you've already 'got' two of the crossing answers. Then you'd have

?a?i??

I'll leave it for a wee while and, then, I'll reveal the answer (I hope, not to much controversy!!!)

Final hint till tomorrow.

Some purists may berate me for using a certain capital letter. However, I felt the clue justified my little bit of 'artistic licence'. I don't normally deviate from good ole Ximenes.
